Cloves are the flower buds of a tree native to Indonesia and is commercially grown in India and Madagascar. When fresh, the flowers are greenish and turns red as they ripen. The flowers are dried before they are used as a spice. Cloves are used in dishes across a variety of cuisines—Asian, African, Middle Eastern and Mexican. The spice lends a distinct, complex flavor to savory dishes and adds an earthy, fruity flavor to sweets and desserts. Add cloves to red wine sauce or marinades to bring out the flavor of meats.
Due to its high oil content, Clove powder tends to stain plastic sheets and containers.
